We recently completed foam replacement operations on seven ferries as part of Torghatten’s ambitious transition to fluorine-free fire foam across its fleet. Each project involved removing old foam, cleaning the system, and refilling it with environmentally friendly alternatives, ensuring compliance with the highest standards of safety and sustainability.

Ensuring a clean and safe process

We followed a detailed process to ensure a smooth transition for each ferry. This involved removing the old foam, cleaning the tanks and pipes using Fluor Clean, and refilling the systems with new fluorine-free foam. All waste materials, including old foam and wash water, were responsibly collected and disposed of in an environmentally safe manner.

Streamlined operations for maximum efficiency

To maximize efficiency and reduce downtime, we serviced all ferries back-to-back. This approach allowed us to work continuously, optimizing both time and resources while keeping costs down for Torghatten. The result was a smooth, uninterrupted process with minimal disruption to their operations.

Completed operations

Here’s a summary of the foam replacements we completed:

MF Barøy: Removed 4,000 liters of old foam and 1,100 liters of wash water. Refilled with 4,400 liters of ECOPOL 3% and 280 liters of ECOPOL 1%.

MF Ørnes: Removed 2,750 liters of old foam and 300 liters of wash water. Refilled with 3,600 liters of ECOPOL 3%.

MF Bodø: Removed 5,000 liters of old foam and 400 liters of wash water. Refilled with 5,000 liters of ECOPOL 3%.

MF Trondenes: Removed 200 liters of wash water and cleaned the tanks. Refilled with 4,600 liters of ECOPOL 3%.

MF Hålogaland: Removed 4,700 liters of old foam and 200 liters of wash water. Refilled with 5,200 liters of ECOPOL 3%.

MF Vågan: Removed 5,000 liters of old foam and 700 liters of wash water. Refilled with 5,800 liters of new foam.

MF Selbjørnsfjord: Removed 3,700 liters of old foam and 600 liters of wash water. Refilled with 4,900 liters of ECOPOL 3%.

Partnering for sustainable progress

Torghatten entrusted us with these crucial service operations, while Nordic Fire & Safety oversaw the overall project. By safely removing old foam and applying new fluorine-free solutions with precision, we helped them meet their sustainability targets.

We’re proud to support Torghatten in their efforts toward safer, cleaner, and more sustainable maritime practices. Together, we’re making a meaningful impact on environmental responsibility in the maritime industry.
