Project Scope and Execution
The project commenced on April, 2024, when the NGP team arrived at the shipyard. The initial stages involved setting up cleaning tanks and lifting equipment to prepare for the washing and sandblasting processes. The first two box coolers were removed from the vessel, and the NGP team began the detailed cleaning process. The cleaning involved high-pressure washing and manual scraping to remove extensive marine growth and mud from the coolers. This was followed by submerging the coolers in chemical baths to dissolve any remaining growth.
Sandblasting and Coating
The coolers were sandblasted to remove the old paint and create adhesion for new paint. The coolers were then coated with two layers of Säkatonit Extra AR-F red, especially designed for rough protection against marine conditions.
Quality Assurance and Recommendations
Some tubes and support plates were found to be damaged, likely due to transportation. The team recommended plugging the worst tubes to prevent future leaks. The coolers are set to remain outside for several days before installation, and a final inspection of the gasket surfaces is advised to ensure no additional contaminants have adhered to the surfaces.
The project was completed with a high level of cooperation between NGP and the Carena shipyard. The team highlighted the efficient support and management provided by the shipyard, which contributed significantly to the project’s success. Despite some logistical hurdles and environmental challenges, the project concluded successfully, ensuring the BL320’s box coolers are in optimal condition for future operations.
